The way an old-fashioned lobster bake works is that seaweed and seawater is gathered at the shoreline, along with round stones roughly the size of an adult’s hand. The stones make up the center of the fire pit and are covered with the seaweed. Then the food is placed on top—traditionally, lobster, clams, mussels, corn, onions, and potatoes. Then, canvas drenched in the seawater is placed on top to retain moisture and steam the mix.
